Another classic northern soul tune – this time by the one and only Major Lance. This song has been covered by many artists but none compare with this version.

Major Lance was born in Mississippi in 1939 and the family moved to Chicago a few years later and this is where blues and soul music was a big part of everyone’s life.

As a young man Major excelled at sports and achieved a high standard in boxing, baseball and basketball but it was music that really caught his imagination and over the coming years made a big name for himself in Chicago and on the soul scene.

Many great records like “The monkey time”, “It’s the beat”, “Um,um,um,um,um,um” and others including the featured track followed.

After having great success on the northern soul scene in the UK, he spent four years in jail for cocaine possession and suffered ill health when released from prison suffering a heart attack some years later in 1987, sadly Major Lance passed away in 1994 and to many his career was unfulfilled but he did leave behind many great records like “Ain’t no soul”.
